The Tony and Jerry Breakfast
The headlines and accolades (or criticism) always seems to be aimed at Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus. Understandably so, as the head coach is the main man who makes things tick. But the behind the scenes ticking is all down to his assistants, whose job it is to focus on the details and implement what is discussed in the coaches’ meetings on the training ground depending on who the opposition is at the weekend.
Tony Brown and Jerry Flannery have their specific areas of expertise, aimed at ensuring that the Springboks perform at their best on match day.
Brown, who admits that he is a better coach than a player, has been tasked with unlocking dominate defence patterns as the Springbok attack coach. Brown, who played for the Sharks in 2006, has always been seen as a bit of a maverick and Rassie has brought him in to add a new dimension to the teams’ attacking systems in a game being stifled by a big focus on defence. Brown is all about creating and attacking space behind the defenders and it is clear that the Springbok backs are buying into his more innovative tactics. But let him explain over breakfast!
Flannery, the new defence coach, worked with Erasmus and Nienaber at Munster so he is well acquainted with Rassie’s coaching style and ethos. Flannery replaced Nienaber – who he says is one of the best coaches he has worked with - as the Bok defence coach and has successfully filled Nienaber’s big boots, as the Boks only lost two tests in his first season in charge of the tacklers!
So, join us for breakfast with your key clients, as we meet the two vital assistant cogs in the Springbok coaching box and learn more about the tactics and strategy behind the Springbok’s success.
Matthew Pearce will add his own astute rugby knowledge and inside perspective as the MC for the morning.
